HyperDex uses memory-mapped I/O to read objects from disk. Through careful use of mmap
and madvise
, HyperDex works with the OS to manage resources so that it does not put memory pressure on the system. Because of this, HyperDex does not maintain a separate buffer pool like a traditional database.
The only memory overhead is a couple of global hash tables. In the next few releases we'll make the size of these hash tables configurable and document how to reduce (or inflate) the memory usage. The current defaults are quite reasonable for most servers and result in a small memory footprint.
