I'll leave this open for the future. But in general: I believe in having a good tool for your "Zettelkasten" note taking and support of your (academic) writing and having a separate good tool for backup, a separate good tool for versioning, a separate good tool for (could) sync, etc. Time has proven that this is a sensible approach. Usually it's inexperienced programmers (this is just my personal, highly subjective opinion) who think their app can solve all problems. Then they end up with half-baked things like backup / sync / versioning, etc.
I agree that having a built-in option that you can enable if you don't have a better option, can make sense. But "a note taking app" should be a note taking app. Not clutter your filesystem with backups and versions and then having to maintain both with sensible defaults (like weekly snapshots for n weeks, monthly for m months, ...) that work for one person and not for another one.
Especially now, I am confident my energy is best spent focussing on the main purpose of the app
I don't want to discourage you, though; I know that not everybody is comfortable with or even knows git.
