I was just wondering if an explanation of setup()
and setup.py would be welcome. Am I approximately correct?

I'd love to see a section explaining the differences between setuptools, distribute, $whatever and giving advice on what to choose.

Just be aware that that guide, according to this issue, is situated here and not here. The project's documentation seems to be pointing to the wrong (old?) project URL.
Have a look at this project instead: https://python-packaging-user-guide.readthedocs.org/en/latest/

Feels a bit sad if we'd copy that text into this project. It feels almost like forking. I see two solutions:
- either asking merge the two projects; or
- simply linking to from Python Guide to https://python-packaging-user-guide.readthedocs.org/en/latest/.

Tarek told me that he'd love for us to import it.

Seems Tarek is no longer maintaining the active fork. Maybe file an issue on the active fork and see if they're still open to merge?

What's the progress on this? Recently tried to find information on a packaging guide, would've been awesome to have it linked through this.

I don't think there is much progress. I just posted a question to merge the two projects here: https://bitbucket.org/pypa/python-packaging-user-guide/issue/34/merge-with-python-guide Will see what they respond.

I made a small temporary fix that links to the site until a decision is made, I recently tried to look for this type of guide and the first place I stopped off at was this guide, I'm sure I'm not the only one who has. Thanks for raising an issue.

Seems like the Python Guide project is to be included in the core Python documentation. This means that they were not interested in merging in their documentation into Python Guide. I'm not entirely sure what steps we should take next. Write our own packaging guide?

Wow, that's awesome news!

Indeed. It's been a long journey - I'm happy Python will finally get an official documentation on Python packaging/distribution.
