Also, you don't want to clone the repository the plugins/ directory. Rather the content of the repository should be in that directory (i.e., there should be ~/.local/share/gedit/plugins/gedit_checkpython.plugin, not ~/.local/share/gedit/plugins/Gedit-checkpython/.plugin

No need for sudo - you can try https as well:
git clone https://github.com/rdunklau/Gedit-checkpython.git
I will add proper lines to README.

I do not agree with you. It is safer to have it in a subdirectory like it is now.
