You could reproduce this bug by running following commands from rabbitmq-server checkout:

I believe that rabbitmq/rabbitmq-server#224 was causing those spurrious erlang distribution connections in our case. While this bug is fixed, this special case could still happen, for example when rabbit is being run in embedded mode alongside some other clustered erlang applications.
