Correct, wire color does not matter.
Electrons really don't care what color the wire is! ;-)
I did see the same static and it's a common issue.
You probably need to enable the SSH1106 driver.
Try uncommenting the //#define DISPLAY_SH1106 on line 85 of Setttings.h
(Remove the leading //)
#define DISPLAY_SH1106 // Uncomment this line to use the SH1106 display -- SSD1306 is used by default and is most common

What screen are you using? Have you confirmed the connections are correct? Are you using the 0.96" or the 1.3" display?

Gnd - G
Vcc - 5V (or 5U I can't tell)
Scl - D5
Sda - D2
The color of the wires on the motor cable don't matter right?
