I agree. I am porting over a Makefile to Invoke. The Makefile had a few targets that checked environment variables before executing the target. I can of course do this by hand in Invoke, but it would be nice to have Invoke support it directly.

@leo-the-manic I added very basic "config option" support in #89 a short while ago. Re: this ticket, offhand I'm thinking it might be fun to update things so the CLI module searches the invoking environment and if it finds "matching" options, it overrides the current values.

E.g. invocations' docs module sets sphinx.source and sphinx.target, so I could see us setting it so the CLI module overwrites those at runtime if the shell env has set SPHINX_SOURCE and/or SPHINX_TARGET.

Food for thought anyway. Would be curious to see your own use case too.
