When you do "cp dira/ dirb/", the -r switch is not the default, too.
IMHO, for the casual user which launch the command for the first time on a large folder, it is better not to clutter the screen with tons of messages.
For the regular user, the "-r" switch is not so difficult to type.

the lack of --repeat is quite distressing when actually fixing errors
it repeatedly sends me to different files in a random pattern based on whats actually shown
