I am not the creator of metastore, so I cannot really answer your question. I could only try to guess the reasons behind choosing binary file format. Well, it's not necessarily a bad choice, but I can see how storing metadata in text file format can be more convenient and useful (even if it will be slower and heavier).
Backward compatibility is important, so we cannot ditch binary file format support. The same goes for -c
option. (I would love to remove special treatment of .git
by default for instance, but it would break current users' expectations, and that's why I introduced -g
for not omitting .git
instead, despite not liking this approach at all.)
If it's possible to make metastore more handy, then we should make it happen. I've created another issue, where I wrote how I think such text file format should look like. (I want to update the issue description as the time goes, and even if I can change your issue as owner of this repo, I find such way of doing things wrong, because I'm not the issue owner after all - that's why I've create the new issue and I'm closing this one).
