I'm reluctant about this, because new textual metadata file format (#6) is exactly meant to be more human-friendly and merge-friendly, so I think that it would be better to work on new format than introduce some half-solutions. But before new file format, we need config file (#7) and to make it sane (i.e. avoiding this obnoxious git option... I thoroughly hate original special case for .git
directories, it shouldn't be done like that, but we have to live with that for now) we need file/dir excluding support even earlier (#8, #9).

It would be still be useful even if metastore moves to a textual format one day.

You have a point here. I think I'm ok with it on second thought.
I'll prepare enhancement entry next week. One thing that needs to remain clear is that this dump should be aimed only at human consumption, i.e. nothing that some scripts would depend on, as it would lock us down later unpleasantly. Mind also that ls -l
lacks details related to xattr, but beside that it should be mostly fine. Actually I would prefer to base it on following output:
ls -alp --time-style=full-iso
with some xattr related improvements (don't have anything particular on my mind yet regarding it).
EDIT (2015-03-25): Sorry, forgot about it, I'll prepare enhancement entry hopefully before end of March.
