Instead of roundRect
numberTextField.placeholder = "Card Number"
numberTextField.layer.borderWidth = 0.75
numberTextField.layer.borderColor = UIColor.lightGray.cgColor
numberTextField.layer.cornerRadius = 3.0
numberTextField.clipsToBounds = true
numberTextField.backgroundColor = .white

when adding backgroundColor the placeholder disappear
