Hello, Sorry for the late response.
You can customize how you want the enter key to behave for you and there are a lot of options to choose from use :help NERDTreeCustomOpenArgs
to learn more about it.
Here is an example for your use case:
let g:NERDTreeCustomOpenArgs = {'file': {'reuse':'currenttab', 'where':'p', 'keepopen':1}}
It will limit the reuse of the buffer to the current tab only and, Open it in the 'p'revious window, afterward keeps the nerd tree open.
I'm sure you can experiment with different options to make it serve you the best.

I'm almost sure this will resolve your issue but I'm not going to close it yet, So you can answer it if you find any weird behavior that doesn't suit your case.
