One of the primary goals with this version was to simplify user configuration, and I feel that we have accomplished that pretty well. By copying the default config.json file to your home config dir (usually ~/.config/powerline) and modifying it you can easily remove the arrow glyphs, and by modifying the theme (almost the same way, see the docs for details) you can also remove any Unicode stuff from that and have a pure ASCII statusline. We could of course provide several alternatives or even have a separate "user submitted configurations" repo, but I'd like to wait with that until this version is out of beta at least.

I agree that we should provide some kind of alternative that's a bit easier to use, so I'll leave this issue open so we can revisit it after the initial release.

There is no easy way to copy such files. I guess it is much better to move configuration files into separate directory, so copying is simple cp. Otherwise even in python if my suggestion (copy-on-start) is implemented you have to write much code that will walk through the filesystem and find .json files.

I'll close this for now. It's a bit easier to create user configs now, and I think I'd rather merge a pull request with an alternative ASCII-only theme if someone decides to create one.

Hello, πŸͺ

I got myself an "ascii" version πŸͺ modifying the relevant config.json files.
It is not much of a replacement for the fancy font glyphs, but I like things minimal πŸͺ .

here is a screenshot, πŸͺ and configs are here -- c00kiemon5ter/vim@c51b3ce

If you like it πŸͺ and would accept a pull request for this, I'd be happy to do it. πŸͺ

Thanks πŸͺ

Oh, found this old issue. First, it was fixed by #958. Second, @c00kiemon5ter there are no table drawing characters in ASCII. So your theme is not an ASCII one, #958 has a real ASCII-only theme (which yet does not give any warranties that you do not have unicode characters in filenames).

Yeap, I even used #958 for some time ;)
No worries, and thanks for powerline πŸ‘
