You have to update your iTerm2 version (see the troubleshooting section in the docs).

Regarding the funny colored characters, this is possibly caused by some contrast setting in OS X which is also described in the troubleshooting section.

Btw. did you think about creating version that don't require custom font? i.e. no background and universally available characters like in prezto? prezto

It's very easy to configure the symbols in this version, and you can create a user configuration and swap every custom symbol to any universally available symbol if you want to. Colorscheme creation is also pretty simple, and it's all explained in detail in the docs. The custom symbols are a big part of what makes this project unique (particularly for terminal/tmux usage because there are already so many prompts to choose from), so I probably won't remove them from the default configuration at least. I like the symbols used in prezto though, so we could definitely use those in addition to the patched symbols.

I agree, but I'd like to use the same prompt for my server and local configuration. It happens that I login on server with different terminal on different computer. I love powerline, because it unifies shell, tmux and vim, but I really think it needs theme that don't require complicated font setup.

@sheerun were you able to get those icons working with powerbar? I think that the glyphs - while nice - are a HUGE overkill and a bit of a pain to get working properly. While I will miss the "proper" fork icon, I can live just fine with Β΅, and using β—€ and β–Ά for spaces (assuming they work). Every time I tried, I got some error... I think python is having difficulty using the special characters.

Long time since I've removed any special characters. I just separate fields by different colors, I get more space, and I don't get any problems when switching terminals. Powerline looks quite good, but it's pain to set up these fonts.

After I've updated terminal to last iTerm2 version, I installed this font, and then it works.
