For ease with Homebrew, I suggest that a tag is added in the near future, or at least at some point :)

Ed1t: Because they usually don't like HEAD-only formulae.

Each release will be tagged with the version number when the plugin is ready for release (which is hopefully very soon!) :)

Is there a reason why PyPi doesn't work so that eventually it could be installed with pip install powerline? As for homebrew on OSX, they typically don't incorporate python packages since they prefer users stick to pip. They might make an exception if you have good reasons.

edit: Just realized the documentation says the reason: "Naming conflict". A pretty good reason!

Yeah, the reason is that someone else has an abandoned package with the same name on PyPi. :/ I have no clue if it's even possible to contact anyone to get it removed. It would be ideal to have the package on PyPi after release, so let me know if you have any suggestions to how we could accomplish that.

Thanks for letting me know, I understand the problem now. There should be some way of contacting the main maintainers of PyPi. For example, if a project appears dead and nobody downloads the repo anymore, it should probably be removed after some length of silence, right? I don't know any way, though, at the moment :(

The discussion group had some activity as recent as 2011 it seems. Only a few contributors (two with the same first name). if you wanted to contact them about PyPi I guess that's the place to go.

I'll second the vote for PyPi. The obvious solution is to name the pypi project something different, such as powerline-status. It's not as sexy but it's certainly better than increasing the packaging burden on the distro communities.

I've stolen powerline-status You're welcome to it if you promise to use semver and keep it updated

I'd have no problem with creating a Homebrew formula for this, but like earlier stated they don't really like python packages. I'm all in favor of powerline-status which is found in pypi! πŸ‘

so this question has come up a couple times now, and you dont have time - who could become the main-tainer, maintainer, main maintainer?

jcharaoui avatar jcharaoui commented on August 24, 2024

Debian now has a Powerline package : https://packages.debian.org/sid/powerline
If anyone is interested in co-maintaining it, let me know! Otherwise, please feel free to report any problems or bugs you may find with the package in the Debian bug tracker.

I also want to mention that if the project were to start making releases, it would help a lot with packaging.
