To answer your question, no, it's not supported out of the box. yet you should be able to hook the ajax object in the onBeforeXXX methods() -> I didn't try.

Let's say ...

You login as orefalo in an application and you would love to change it to something else. The system will check if the username has existed from the database (thru Ajax). The system will output some warning message if the username has been used by others.

However, when I put in orefalo again in the username field and hit save, the system tells me that it has been registered in the system. I think I need to pass another parameter to exclude the original value, ie.orefalo in the search.

Any ideas?

I am afraid we do not support this scenario at the field level.

Ajax form validation should however do the job.
You could simply use two input fields, on visible the other hidden to get this working.

Actually, you can pass extra parameters by using the onBeforeXXX methods.

There you can change the extraData attribute : it is used to construct the URL
