It was occuring because I was locked to a particular rails version which has a known issue with an integer function in JSON. Stepping away from that rails version seems to have solved the issue. Thanks.

hi, which version do you use?
(I had the same issue with mysql2 gem with native extensions on v0.5.0, but after start using v0.4.0 problem has been resolved.)
