There hasn't been explicit coding conventions so far, but the code has generally been written using Eclipse (or by XJC*), with its built in profile (Window > Preferences > Java > Code Style > Formatter).

So I'd say it makes sense to follow the Eclipse coding conventions, and their development conventions more generally: http://wiki.eclipse.org/Development_Conventions_and_Guidelines

What do you think?

  • A lot of code was generated by JAXB's XJC; that code just uses the formatting which XJC emits.

Makes sense, yes. I think it would be a good idea to put a link on the wiki and/or a "CONTRIBUTING.md" file saying which conventions docx4j is following. Because I noticed several unconsistent coding styles, sometimes in a single file (for example, tabs or spaces for indentation).
These things are just details, but I think it's quite important in such an open-source project.
