should be the way to go. To be flexible for non-Rcpp versions later, can we have something like a pointer to std::ostream
that can be Rcout

Alternative: Avoid messages from C++ completely and throw exceptions in case of error (catch them from R).
rand: Avoid rand
but use <random>
. Simple solution for RNG state is to seed the C++ RNG with an integer from R. But that won't give cross-system/architecture reproducibility, so using the Rcpp RNG should be better (explained somewhere in the Rcpp docs).

But: We need to use one RNG for all random numbers (or at least seed them from each other) to ensure reproducibility. Best to use the R RNG when in Rcpp (see above).
