Would be nice to have a keyboard shortcut for this btw (and maybe have a keyboard manager ?)

When we go for UX, I agree that the safe and brainless solution is to
follow patterns (painfully) learned by user over the years. However we
should keep it open for improvement and try out new
things/approach/ui/UX/patterns. I guess the harder will be to make sure
variations we do are actual improvements... Let's try to do better than
photoshit/paint.

If you are referring to the changes made yesterday (adding a secondary color mapped to the right click) it was mostly driven by a real need. While doing sprites, I was really tired to have to swap between two color.

I'm not doing this for the sake of copying photoshmop and co :)

For me swapping primary/sceondary is motivated from what you told me : with a touchpad it's hard to use the right click. So this swapping would be a degraded way of having two colors easily available.

But point taken, we can try to do some innovative UI if anyone is motivated to do so.

I fully agree about the need and what you did is awesome, just to be clear
:)

What about a bigger, more obvious, color palette, very close the the canvas, where simply hovering over one of the colors would assign it to the current tool? Would make the need for a secondary color less important and would bring a very fast and smooth (no freaking click or cumbersome keystroke in the way) way of switching color, which is, I guess, is what you end up doing most often.

Transcript of live chat with @captainbrosset : I think the idea is "interesting" :) , especially for laptops or tablets (for tablets the additional "click" would be quite natural actually).

Creating a new issue for this.
