It seems like you'll have to build Cyanogenmod with my patch yourself - you
don't need to flash everything you've built, only boot.img.
Here are instructions:

Apply this patch to kernel sources before compiling Cyanogenmod:
https://github.com/pelya/android-keyboard-gadget/blob/master/kernel-3.1.patch
using command
patch -p1 < kernel-3.1.patch
There are chances that the patch will not apply cleanly, because the kernel
may be too old, likely 2.9.

I have read your instructions to launch commands on github from a linux
box. I have previously run ubuntu from a CD/DVD but I would like to ask if

Thank you. If the 858 smart is too old to have a 3.1 kernel, perhaps I had better try my current phone instead. This is a vodafone smart mini - 875 comes up on the play app store, but I am unsure of the model number.
