I looked into this for a bit a little while ago. This may have changed but at the time It looked like Chrome didn't let you have an a/v stream and a datachannel open on the same peerconnection. I'm not positive about this, it may be that if you open the streams in the right order it will work, but it doesn't look that way.

I wonder if something could be done by starting a new peerconnection using existing information; ICE candidates, etc...

Sorry no timeline yet. I'll start working on it soon, really waiting for WebRTC implementation in Chrome/Firefox to stabilize a bit more before embarking on it. Continue to follow issue #2 for updates.
