This turns out to be kind of tricky. Colorbars are easy to use with heatmaps and the like, and if you were mapping floats to colors, it wouldn't be so bad. But I think it's possible.
See you what you get out of this: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/6063876/matplotlib-colorbar-for-scatter
Then consider using c=dates.astype(numpy.int64).astype(numpy.float64)
in .scatter()
. Then consider turning the index into a list of formatted date strings yourself. You use them directly like in this example: http://matplotlib.org/examples/pylab_examples/colorbar_tick_labelling_demo.html
If you don't figure out it from these example, I'll take a deeper look this weekend.

Thanks Alfred,
I ended up just overriding the labeling of the color bar rather than explicitly displaying the underlying data
something along the lines of:
plt.scatter(df['A'],df['B'],c=df.index)
cb = plt.colorbar()
cb.ax.set_yticklabels(df.index)
plt.show()
for the example above this work because there aren't many data points. On bigger examples I periodically selected the elements of the index that matched the tick marks. Dirty I know, but now my graphs are pretty...

sounds good to me. Glad you found a solution.
