I think this happens if you install an updated version of VMware over the top of an existing patched installation. Deleting the hidden .unlocker file in the program folder will allow auto-unlocker to patch the new files.

Yes, exactly this I had always, when I updated Vmware Workstation to a newer version or just an Update.
Deleting .unlocker and then it downloads the tools again (takes a while) but then worked.
