What’s a »dock area app« and which operating systems use that?

Moving the media playback controls seems to only make sense for guests, not for logged in users – because they already have a music player.

»Auto playback«, at least of music, should never be done, not even as option.

I was thinking of the unity indicators, the gnome2 panel notification area, the windows notification area or the mac os menubar mini apps - a place where applications can put controls and notifications.

The best place for this I think is left of the search bar. On hover it could show the currently played track with album art.

There are other apps that could use an area like this: the news app, maybe the notifications when someone shared a file ore something else with you - like facebook or g+ notifications.

I don't want to create a new player. I just want to move the minimal controls to a different place, left of the search bar.

I see that auto playback is a bad idea ;)

@kabum will take care of the media app during GsoC 2013. @jancborchardt Any objections to the media app indicator left of the search bar? Or do you happen to already have a mockup? If the apps move to the top we could show player controls and song information when hovering over the normal app icon.

@butonic several problems (short: yes, I have objections to that):

It’s not clear yet if the apps will move to the top (probably not, and I will prototype a similar but slightly different design in the next days [hint: left instead of top]). So I would prefer not to have any app dial into »empty space« in the top bar, because it will likely not be there anymore in ownCloud 6.

The main problem here is that we don’t have everything ajaxified yet, which means that if you switch an app (or even open a folder in Files), the music will stop for a moment. This is highly annoying and we had bug reports about that, thus removed it. I’d rather not offer »music in the background« if it doesn’t work seamlessly. That means we don’t need the controls outside of the music app anyway.

And now lastly, for when everything in ownCloud is fully asynchronous without page refreshes: The media controls should simply replace or overlap the Music app icon. Should definitely show a pause/play toggle, and probably a »next« button. But nothing more, we don’t need a full scrobber bar or title display or volume slider or whatnot, at least not in teh first version.

Hope that clears it up.

@jancborchardt sure, I did not know the global playback was disabled deliberately. good to know that @kabum can concentrate on the media app itself for now.

Closing this, because we will not have global playback until everything is Ajaxified.
