This error is not related to Nominatim. Your postgres DB is corrupted, might be due to a crash or due to a disc fault.

I renamed the existing nominatim database in postgres to nominatim_old before trying to load again. So the DB was created new by the import. The old DB still works when I rename it back, so I wonder ...

Well, yes, I would expect it to still work. If the newly created DB hit a bad sector on your disc, then this won't have any effect on the old DB.

If you don't want to overwrite the old DB you can also make the new import in a DB with a different name. Simply add @define('CONST_Database_DSN', 'pgsql://@/whatevername'); to your local.php settings. But renaming works just as well.

Actually, I think the I/O error was a memory issue. I increased PGs shared memory a bit, now it seems to import fine.

Yes it was a memory issue, 2GB shared memory for PG wasn't enough, the rebuild worked with 4GB now.

Glad it worked. But I'm a bit surprised that insufficient memory should result in an IO error. It would probably be wise to test both your RAM and disc for hardware errors nonetheless, just to avoid nasty surprises later.
