The synthesis in the Tetrahedron paper above installs the Br too, meaning if that core can be made, it might be possible to quickly introduce the Ph via microwave Suzuki, then chlorinate and substitute with a nitrogen Nu to provide some flipped thiophenes. This is a non-priority for the current round (#2 of aminothienopyrimidines) but would be a valuable community input - i.e. a request to repeat the synthesis of the core according to the Tet paper to evaluate synthetic accessibility.
