My normalized formula for variance of range [0,1]:

d = edit_distance(w1, w2)
v = d / max(w1.length, w2.length)

However, I'm realizing that intuitively word similarity is not considered proportional to the word lengths, but rather always by the number of character edits needed. So I don't think configuring edit distance by this variance formula will be used, and will instead use variation of raw edit distance.

Variation/randomness will be a value in range [0,1], being the probability that a word is chosen randomly instead of by edit proximity for each of the choices.
