This is indeed a bug, a workaround has been pushed in d0e4581 (experimental branch).
Merlin's internal "cursor" management need some cleaning.

I see. In your opinion is the experimental branch stable enough for day to day use? Might as well switch to it if I want to report bugs...

Depends on the code you work with. I use the experimental branch, even for non merlin-related code, though these days most of my ocaml code is merlin-related, and overall the experience is the same.
The main difference is much better type error recovery… which may triggers an awful amount of error messages on really broken code.
Since you are closely following the development of merlin, I don't think you take much risk trying the experimental branch :) -- I was a bit optimistic, experimental branch was quite broken today :P.
