The most recent protocol spec for 3.8 is a bit unclear about how to handle 3.3 and 3.7 when the server isn't using authentication. I went back and studied the 3.3 and 3.7 versions of the spec and I think I've got a fix for you. I just pushed the update. Please re-open the bug if it doesn't fix your problem.
