Let's wait until configurable shortcuts #477 get implemented first.

You can do this already with third-party apps, as you mentioned. I'm not sure if we can provide a global shortcut for launching Notable but we can definitely focus to it. Thanks for the suggestion!

Without a proper settings interface I would initially add this as a configurable key to the to-be-documented in the ~/.notable.json settings file, would that be alright for you?

Related, I'd like to see a global shortcut for opening a new note as well, as at times I just need to rapidly take something down.

That's actually a planned feature already https://github.com/fabiospampinato/notable/blob/master/.todo#L4

I'm happy using a json config file.

Maybe you should merge both TODO lists (Github issues and todo list in the repo)?

Maybe I will, at the moment I'm busy trying to respond to everyone, then I'll have to make issues out of the good feedback people provided me on reddit and elsewhere, then I'll probably just remove the .todo file entirely.

@Atticus- @kergoth @fabiospampinato What would be the best global shortcut for focusing Notable?

Then using Ctrl+Alt+N + Ctrl+N will quickly create a new note.

I'm not sure, but this should be configurable, perhaps with no default shortcut.

Via .notable.json? Not sure how that would work now.

perhaps with no default shortcut.

I disagree. A lot of people never even look at settings, just use defaults. If it doesn't conflict with anything, I don't see a downside.

How about a default shortcut with a menu item "Enable/Disable Global Shortcut" for now?

Also, what's Ctrl+Alt+N equivalent on Mac? Cmd+Option+N? Will that work?

I don't know I haven't decided yet. Ideally there should be some kind of interface for recording the shortcut too.

Personally, especially in this early stages where mostly technical people are using the app, I don't think asking to take a look at the settings is too much.

How about a default shortcut with a menu item "Enable/Disable Global Shortcut" for now?

Sounds like an unnecessary menu item, if you want to disable it you can set the shortcut to '' or something like that.

Also, what's Ctrl+Alt+N equivalent on Mac? Cmd+Option+N? Will that work?

Often in macOS instead of using Ctrl we use Cmd, I'm not sure if that conflicts with anything.

It conflicts. Every shortcut you can think of, someone already had the same thought and took it. And the others, they are either too complex to make sense, and already used by some users for another application.

Please don't encourage applications that force global shortcuts on users. Especially since there is no application settings yet.

But if it's disabled by default, then what's the problem?

If you added this menu item a user could configure a global shortcut via the keyboard preference pane without you having to add the option to the app interface / settings.

Right, but only under macOS (I think). Besides each thing I add to the UI has a cost, I can't add a menu entry for every little setting.
