Hey [kapale]
Thanks for the suggestion. I'm not convinced this is a good idea to be honest, well at least only if it's done in a way that doesn't take up more space and still gives enough information to be helpful. A big improvement only available from 2.0 is that when clicking the image the asset details are shown. If we were to do this we should use the image label and not the filename and crop it if it's longer than one line. The easiest thing to do would be use a tooltip that is displayed when hovering the preview image, which wouldn't use more space. This won't be helpful on touch devices, however that should be okay since it's still possible to see in the asset details when clicking the preview.
IIRC [gbks] and I talked about reducing the amount of space needed for the image editor by moving some of the actions onto the preview image, which could have an impact on this as well.

Im working on a website right now where a lot of pictures are looking almost the same and always wondered how to know which image is selected. To be honest, I didn't even realized that you can click on the image. Maybe an "i"nfo button in the upper right of the preview image would help.
Still, I like to know quickly which image is displayed, so my suggestion would be
Image: image_filename.jpg / Title
I'd prefer filename but I could live with the title, and filename as fallback or be able to configure this in the nodeType

There is now a plugin from @Sebobo which does this among other things https://github.com/Sebobo/Shel.Neos.ImageChecker
