in case that was a problem, but it still fails.

If I remove the folder-hook, then it all works. It's something to do with it.

Hmmm, there was a circular source
due to the folder-hook
. For some reason, that worked in mutt(1), but I don't think it was something I should expect to work.
I've fixed the circular dependency, and now it works. I had to remove a few macros, which don't work anymore after the fix in my muttrc(5) files, but those are less useful now, so I won't miss them.

Hmmmm. The fix mentioned above fixed one thing and broke two.
The real reason it was failing is that identical folder-hook
s are considered as different hooks, and every time I included a file, it added another time the same hook, which caused the weirdness.
This fix in my muttrc(5) seems to be good:
