Install JDK 1.7.x or 1.8.x. The program depends on 1.7 APIs. You can make it work with 1.6, but you need to modify the source.

I ran into the same issue. Would it make sense to provide precompiled jars? This would avoid the need for everyone to have the correct JDK and pulling BouncyCastle as well.
I made it work by installing JDK 1.7u79, and setting JAVA_HOME: $export JAVA_HOME=$(/usr/libexec/java_home -v 1.7)

You can find precompiled binaries online (on Sourceforge), but I don't intend to hosts jars. This is not an really end-user tool.
