If the value is 0, it is pretty likely that's what mysql returns. Do you know how PHP or other mysql drivers handle this?

Looking at the mysql and mysql c++ library reference docs, it seems 0 is returned "if the previous statement does not use an AUTO_INCREMENT value." MySQL doesn't look at column names ('id' or otherwise), it only looks for an AUTO_INCREMENT column type.

Ok, I'm labeling this as a bug. What needs to be done here is setting insertId to null.

Changed my mind, IMO the current behavior is in line with what MySQL wants.
