Seems like a pretty low priority item; what is the reason you'd like this?
Untested: you could probably get your desired behavior with a preflight script that did this:
defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow DesktopPicture /path/to/custom_image
and a postflight that did:
defaults delete /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow DesktopPicture
or something a little more elaborate if you need to save and restore an existing loginwindow DesktopPicture...

I would like to use a custom image containing some basic warnings like not to disconnect computer from network, not to try to put it to sleep while munki is running. I am working in an university and the users/students should know what NOT to do while system is installing updates...
Yes it can be done with pre&postscripting but it is not as neat. But this is not a top-priority "issue", I was thinking that if you have managed to use that standard /System/Library/CoreServices/DefaultDesktop.jpg as background image for munki then probably it would be not a big issue to set munki to check another location for image.
But as I have not looked at the source too deeply I could be wrong...

"not to disconnect computer from network"
When installing, munki does not need network access -- it has already downloaded all the packages it needs and installs them from local disk.
"not to try to put it to sleep while munki is running."
Wouldn't munki just resume where it left off when the machine was re-awakened?
"I am working in an university and the users/students should know what NOT to do while system is installing updates..."
OK, get your point.

Would be nice, but I agree - it's a low priority item.

I started working on this in a preflight/postflight form and it is quite simple, but what I quickly realized is that you'd also need to have a broken_client script also in place to rescue a borked managedsoftwareupdate session. It will never get to the postflight if there is a problem with the session data. It seems like the munki client would be better suited to rescuing from this sort of thing and could easily handle it.
Yes, it's low priority, but would be useful. I propose a LoginWindowBackground key in ManagedInstalls.plist. The client would take care of figuring out if it needed to be set (if doing a restart or logging out) and then set it back after its done or if it errored out.

The right approach here would be to modify Managed Software Update.app to display a different image in its backdrop window, rather than modifying the actual loginwindow background image.

So I should be working on modifying getLoginwindowPicture() in MSUStatusWindow.py?

That's probably the right place, but the function probably should then be renamed to something like getBackdropPicture().

Given Apple's changes to the loginwindow appearance in Lion and Mountain Lion, and since no-one added this to MSU.app in the last three years, I'm calling this one dead.
