Right, Flash doesn't give us direct access to raw file data, so it is not usable for inspecting big files. Useful only for files < 200mb and mostly images or audio files. It can upload them without preloading though in default mode (with chunking disabled). I have an experimental branch locally that enables or disables chunking depending on the runtime.
Check this as well: When to use chunking and when not?.

My uploader has a "resume" feature so if a user has a failed upload they don't have to start over. It needs to read the file for two reasons:
- I generate a hash based on the content so I know if the file being uploaded is one started before. I might be able to work around this by generating a hash based on filename, file size, content type
- I do my own chunking so I can resume later by just uploading the chunks not yet uploaded.
So the big debate is should I:
- Just require large file uploads to be uploaded by new browsers only. Smaller uploads can use any browser.
- Investigate the flash chunking more to see if I can support resuming using flash's native abilities.
Right now I'm leaning towards the first option. Either way there is nothing to do here so closing this issue.
Thanks for the feedback.

Well... would be great if you could find up some undocumented and unknown way to overcome this :| Adobe allows access to raw data in AIR, shame that they officially lack it in Flash Player.
