The profvis output is misleading here (don't know why). distinct in only called once, but it queries the data base for each column separately. I'm not sure if this can be optimized. What you definitely can do is adding keys to the columns you join and filter on or disable strings_as_factors.

Or, if this is an option, pull() the tibble and continue working with the in-memory data set.

Had a second look, there is nothing we can do about. Time is spent in joining tables, not in the backends.
