For the record, that line causes problem with GHC-9.0 as well, but different one:

https://hackage.haskell.org/package/th-compat is a package which could help the compat story, especially after haskell-compat/th-compat#10 is implemented.

An alternative is to add bounds to base restricting chessIO to use only single GHC (matching the stack.yaml you use. IMHO stack is just a bad tool for developing libraries which support multiple GHC versions).

@mlang note, you need an upper bound too, as GHC-9.0 doesn't work either (there will be install plan as soon as o-clock has a compatible version - and the current is if ghc-prim version bound is relaxed)
