Which Linux distro are you using?
I got such an error in a fedora or opensuse vm.
Is this a persistent problem?
Appimageupdate is an (buggy?) opensource https://github.com/AppImage/AppImageUpdate
Should the old full browser download come again, if appimage update fails for whatever reason?
For me it worked fine on ubuntu20.04 and saved update time and reduced network traffic.
Does the linked standalone tool work on your pc? (the appimage can also be externally updated, by AppImageUpdate)

Tried again with current release using both Ubuntu/PopOS 20.04 and Manjaro and auto-update works.
