Thanks for your request. This feature was also suggested in #6 and it's still in my (long) todo list. There is this extension https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/413/dash-hotkeys/, but it isn't compatible with dash-to-dock, nor with gnome shell 3.6.

The linked extensions plays nicely with dash to dock on 3.4 @ ubuntu 12.04. I think @micheleg can close this.

Yep, I actually just tried it, and it works for what it is meant for, i.e. triggering the application clicks from the dash. However, there is at least one trouble I cant think of, which is that when the dash is not visible, you have no clue what applications are linked to which number / key.
You'll say that you should know them, but I have 12 applications on my current dash, and except for the 4 first, I'll be honest, I have no idea which key is for gimp and which for shotwell. I'd appreciate to have the dock show up when is pressed, even if it doesn't mean going to overview because you don't release before pressing something else. It's a matter of accessibility (aka here, user-friendliness).

Showing the dash is the first step. Then you want to show the numbering, because you don't want to count. Counting is fine for the 3 first (almost), not for the rest. On Ubuntu, you have a sort of tooltip with the shortcut on each dash icon so that you easily know which one to press for each dash application. Having that would be perfect. :D

Well, hitting <Super> and typing a few letters is faster than reaching for 7-0 with the <Super> key down. I use it for first 5 items that I switch frequently (browser, sublime, terminator, doublecmd, thunderbird) and it works flawlessly.

I'll see, if I have time, I'll try to use the <Super> event from dash-hotkeys to show/hide the dash from dash-to-dock, and then number can simply be added as a css property to make it simple. It would emulate the whole thing well enough to be what I need.
(though I'll wait to have Fedora 18 installed ... mah, I'll see if things work well with gnome 3.6)

Shortcuts work in 3.6 as well. I've done that some time ago in https://github.com/franziskuskiefer/app-keys-gnome-shell-extension

I'm closing this issue as it is implemented and being refined in #360.
