Zur Verdeutlichung. Der Pastebutton wird auf allen Elementen angezeigt, er dürfte aber nur innerhalb der eigenen Variantengruppe angezeigt werden.

@stefanheimes I have a problem here. the $GLOBALS['TL_DCA'][*]['list]['sorting']['paste_button_callback'] does not get triggered in the DC_General at all.
Do you have any clue how and when this one got lost?

There is still a whole lot to do, as atm it appears the mode 5 cut & paste is entirely broken.

Not completely, there has been some refactoring in the DC_General and now we can't paste into the same root element anymore. @stefanheimes could you have a look at it please.
