I got it, what I can do to resolve this issue?

There are (at least?) three ways to go about it:

  1. Rename your project.
  2. Rename the executable, either within the repository itself or at install time.
  3. Leave the naming clash unresolved and let downstream (i.e. *BSDs' and Linux ports/package maintainers) deal with it.

The first option seems the best but I can understand reluctance to do so. The seconds one seems like a compromise. The last seems like the worst option, IMHO.

BTW, I'm not part of either project - I merely use the other Got and only just noticed this one linked in a mailing list post - so am only letting you know of the other's existence. What you do with the information is up to you :^)

Hi Melbahja,

I came up with a few suggestions:

  1. wgot (not very imaginative but instantly people will know what your program does, more likely to come up in search results, thus get more users)
  2. gogot (pronounced like 'robot'; like the current name its written in past tense so implies that it downloads fast, ie gogot already got it)
  3. chunkygot or chunkyget (cutesy name, since it uses chunked encoding).

I use Got all the time to download podcasts, thanks for writing it!

PS I think it was me who accidentally opened this can of worms when I posted a link to this project on an openbsd mailing list. Someone was having trouble with a large download and I suggested they try Got. It didn't occur to me about the other project with the same name (which is a git replacement). Woops, sorry about that! So I thought I should at least try and think of name suggestions :-)

Brett.

Hey Brett,

thank you very mush for putting Got link out there, I think wgot is a good name, I will consider it when I write v2 with wget flags compatibility.
