The problem is that the fix you are cherry picking cannot help you. It fixes the internal format. What you need is a not yet existing patch for the TeX input so that it generates MathML that is in accordance with the clarified spec and renders as expected in Firefox. (The MathML will be much less legible which is one of the many reasons we argued against this change/clarification of the spec.)

Ah, correction. The problem is not the input but the toMathML extension. Either way, upstream is missing a patch.

Try it now. I've made some adjustments to the develop branch that I think will take care of both the double displaystyle attributes and with get the displaystyle attribute properly shown when it is needed. See if that doesn't take care of your problem.
