I guess I could do this myself with something like turf.bbox, but just wondering if internally supercluster can already easily return a bbox range so I don't have to take on additional performance hits for calculating a bbox around a large list of features

From further investigation, it looks like the points behind a cluster do not fit into a box that doesn't intersect the bbox of other clusters. Is that correct? If so, it looks like I'll have to go with querying with a list of points within the cluster.

Yes, that's correct. I think querying with getLeaves is OK if your cluster isn't too big.
