This seems like a natural thing to include as part of a solution to issue #24.

I think my re-factoring experiment over at #61 might indirectly fix this. Also, as a workaround for now, you could include a TileJSON file as a bundle resource, then copy it into the cache directory, making sure to follow MBXMapKit's file naming conventions.
