This only needs to happen if the environment symlinks to the cache right? If the environment is hard linked or copied I guess the cache can simply be removed at any time right?

In that case one will have to redownload the packages that are not in the cache anymore and one loses some benefits of the cache.

Maybe we could also register per-package into which places it has been linked in an extra-companion file.

I also still think that it would be good if we register all the environments, in order to facilitate cleaning them up / discovery etc.
