I tried machinomy-contracts v4.0.5 as well as v4.0.9 on Ropsten, but same error for both.

Update: I found that if you use tsc version 2.6.2, you need to run tsc client.ts server.ts --lib ES2015 instead.

@ukstv any idea? should we try to use the code from the examples folder, or from the readme?

So, the issue was invalid truffle-hdwallet-provider. Upstream version of it still does not support "Ethereum Signed Message"-prefixed signatures. No action from the library is required.
