This is a long term goal. Meanwhile, we have enabled the existing makefiles to benefit from running make in parallel (make -j4, for example).

If there is just one makefile, then cleaning just part of the build tree, with, for example, make -C Macaulay2 clean, will no longer work. It might be good to provide something like that, anyway, perhaps with makefile stubs in various directories that implement partial builds.
