only informational - all things are fine as long as the to be trashed file is not in a directory mounted in from elsewhere. We should not rely on the work of learnresistant morons.

BTW: I know that someone could find the description and my short summary offensive - so please rewrite it in nicer words if offended. I don't find nicer words for this bullshit.

@tsujan - is there something we can do? This change make our trash sensless for not very basic partion and mount layouts.

It's a long time that I know trash has a problem in USB mount. Gnome devs' decision isn't surprising at all; they have an old habit of removing problems, instead of solving them.

Let's wait until file renaming, deleting, copying,... become impossible with GLib -- after all, their codes aren't as simple as what Gnome devs can handle -- then, we'll think about kio.

ok, the waiting period will possible not that long (why there is there no emoticon for  ??) 😈 :smiling_imp¿: is fugly :D

No, unfortunately.

First, they ruined Gnome; then, after a short time, they ruined GTK+ altogether. Now, only GLib has remained. I like to see what they'll do with it. But it's too soon to predict anything.

Sad! So sad!

Joking aside, switching to kio isn't impossible but it'll need A LOT of work -- by A LOT I mean A LOT.

So, let's enjoy stupid optimism as long as we can.

I know the consequences and am not happy about - if i would be really pissed and offended i would just delete the few lines of code and be done with. But that isn't worth the long term effort.

agaida avatar agaida commented on August 21, 2024

hmm - that will be nice, i think i will just try it with cinnamon and xfce :D

EDIT: We preached the good practices like:

  • having /home on a separated partition - or even better:
  • leave alone /home/$user and just link or bind mount directories into $HOME ...

Suppose that we add a workaround for this nice work of Gnome devs' -- it may be possible. But Gnome pathology shows that this may be only the first step in a process of sabotage. So, we would make fools out of ourselves if we continue adding workarounds.

The only short term option is that kind of optimism I mentioned above.

i know you are right - thats why i suggested the only sane option we have: switching to kio longterm (really longterm). They will not change their mind and will destroy glib more and more. Maybe not this year or next year - but they will do it long term - we should be prepared. No action needed right now.

I completely agree.

BTW, switching to kio could be done gradually. But it's too soon to take a decision.

I can't help mentioning a Freudian slip of tongue in the comment of that commit:

This behavior has the nice side-effect that it solves issues with hangs on network filesystems

"Side effect" means "a secondary and usually adverse effect (as of a drug)", according to Merriam-Webster.
